About Kris
Hi! My name is Kris Meyer. I grew up in Johnson County Kansas where I humbly started out working for my mother's woman-owned commercial cleaning company, eventually saving enough money to become a first-generation college graduate. My husband, USMC Veteran Sergeant Brandon Meyer, and I attended public schools in Kansas. Together, we are raising our daughters in public schools because we believe in the power of accessible education for all.
Growing up in public schools taught me the values of hard work, community, and the importance of looking out for one another. Whether helping my mom clean offices late into the night or chasing my dreams of becoming a teacher, I learned the value of perseverance and the determination of a working family from a young age.
After graduating from college, I didn't stray far from home. I wanted to give back to the community that had shaped me, so I dove headfirst into my first elementary teaching job at USD 232 De Soto public schools. From there, I served as a school improvement specialist, associate high school principal, and principal of Starside Elementary from 2015 to 2021. Today, I spend my days giving back to the community serving a non-profit foundation supporting new moms, adults diagnosed with cancer, children with special needs, and individuals facing mental health challenges.
From singing to my students on the rooftop during the pandemic to advocating for better resources in our schools, I've always been passionate about making a difference right here in our own backyard.
But my journey hasn't been without its challenges. Like many working families in our community, I've witnessed the struggles faced by our public schools today. Overcrowded classrooms, teacher attrition, and underfunded public school programs are just a few of the obstacles our Kansas kids and schools encounter daily. As a parent, I've seen firsthand the impact of these challenges on our daughters’ education.
Education is the cornerstone of opportunity, and investing in our schools isn't just the right thing to do—it's essential for the future of our community. As your representative on the Kansas State Board of Education, I'll work tirelessly to prioritize education and give every child the chance to reach their maximum potential. So, whether you're a lifelong resident or new to the area, I want you to know that I'm here to listen, to learn, and to be a voice for you in Topeka.
